Johor Bahru (JB) is located at the southern tip of the
Malaysian Peninsula. It is the capital of the state of Johor Darul Takzim. Dubbed as the ‘Southern Gateway,” JB is also a part of the Singapore-Johor-Riau growth triangle (Sijori). JB is within walking distance to
Singapore, as the two places are connected by the 1038m-long Causeway. Today, Johor Bahru is the second largest urban area in
Malaysia. While historical landmarks and quality
hotels in Malaysia already stand on the city, more buildings and
resort hotels in Malaysia are being constructed.
Founded in 1855,
Johor Bahru was then known as Tanjung Puteri. Sultan Abu Bakar later named it in 1866 Johor Bahru, meaning new jewel. Under Abu Bakar’s rule, the Malayan fishing village experienced growth with the establishment of buildings like the Istana Besar and the State Mosque. JB continued to flourish and expanded its territories leading to its recognition as a city in January 1994.
Located 28 KM Northwest of
Johor Bahru is Senai International Airport. Johor Bahru also has a brand new railway station, JB Sentral. It is right next to the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex. Being the “Southern Gateway,” JB also has an official seaport. The Zon Ferry Terminal, at Stulang Laut, is an international entry point. Buses travel to and from
Singapore via the Causeway except for the CW-3 buses. It is important to note that Singaporean bus lines bound for
Malaysia can only stop at one location in
Malaysia. Larkin Bus Station also serves as a terminal for taxis. The red cabs travel within town and the blue cabs travel outside. Cabs are also available for long distance trips, but only special licensed taxis are allowed to operate across the border.
Tourists are in for historical attractions and colourful activities - products of various ethnic races. JB flaunts several structures of exemplary architecture, nature getaways, night markets, delectable local food and handicrafts. Truly, a visit to
Johor Bahru is about numerous nature adventures and cultural immersion.
Mount Ophir, popularly known to the locals as Gunung Ledang, is 1, 276 meters high. This legendary mountain is a favorite amongst hikers. Another venue for adventure seekers is the Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest, an 8-hectare forest reserve which is 30 minutes away from JB. There are also historic places flaunting exemplary architectural designs and important artefacts. Grand Palace Park (Istana Besar) has a dome of Malay design contrasted with its blue roof of Anglo influence. Inside the palace is the Royal Abu Bakar Museum which features rare artifacts, royal heirlooms, personal memorabilia, and art collections.
