Overview: Kuala Lumpur   [show/hide]

Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia’s capital city, is at the center of Selangor state. It is the largest and the only global city in Malaysia. Formerly known as Pengkalan Lumpur, KL is home to the world famous Petronas towers, the best 5-star hotels in Malaysia, and gargantuan shopping malls – a far cry from the tin mining place it was in the 1850s. KL is a picture of both modern and traditional landscapes, with structures like the Petronas Twin Towers and the Sultan Abdul Sammad Building. A valley bordered by the Titiwangsa Mountains, this city is also endowed with natural wonders like the Batu Caves and parks.

Kuala Lumpur is home to two airports: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (klia.com.my) and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, also known as Subang International Airport. Riding a train is the most practical way to go to and around KL, as traffic jams are all over the place. Trains are fast and do not cost much. All the different train systems connect to Brickfields, where Malaysia’s central railway hub is located. Buses also provide cheap and comfortable ways of traveling for long distance trips. They are not advisable, however, in the morning as they get cramped and roads get congested. Puduraya is KL’s main bus station providing trips around Malaysia and to other countries, with the exception of domestic destinations like Kuala Lipis and Jerantut. Red and white cabs are all over the city; however, riding one may cost you a fortune.

The stunning 88-floor Petronas Towers are KL’s most famous landmark. Meanwhile, shopaholics head to Bukit Bintang – the city’s fashion district. Bukit Bintang is also where Berjaya Times Square stands, the 13th biggest shopping centre in the world. For Malaysian products like batik, art and handicrafts, visit the Central Market. Take a look at Malaysia’s rich history at the Merdeka Square where Moorish influences are seen on the building designs. Of course, KL knows how to party so do not forget to visit the bars and clubs.

The diverse but united people, a rich culture and a vision – all these contribute to the rapid growth of the city. Kuala Lumpur’s determination to remain a leader among the Asian tiger cities economies never wavers.
