Overview: Bangkok   [show/hide]

Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is the largest urban area in the country. Bangkok sits at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River and was once dubbed as the “Venice of the East” with its vast network of khlong, river for Thai. It is a city abundant in cultural landmarks and adorned with a modern cityscape. Its local name, holds the record of being the longest name of a place, translates into “the city of angels.”

It is the home of the busiest airport in Southeast Asia, the Suvarnabhumi Airport. Trains also connect Bangkok to other Thai cities and neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Singapore. The colour-coded Thai buses are the easiest way of going around the city.

Bangkok, just like Singapore, is a shopping hub as designer brands adorn the streets of Siam. Paragon, one of the biggest shopping malls in Asia, leaves shopaholics breathless with its collection of luxury brands. On the other hand, cheap finds or goods are found at Chatuchak Weekend Market.

Bangkok, however, is not just about the modern city life. A visit to Rattanakosin, the Old City, gives one a glimpse of ancient Thailand. The Old City is home to sophisticated palaces and holy temples like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Sprinkled all over Bangkok are 400 temples in devoted to Buddha. The Chao Phraya River and other Bangkok canals features the traditional Thai way of life.

Finding a place to stay is not also a problem. The city center, Sukhumvit Road, flaunts some of Thailand’s luxurious hotels, like the Amari Boulevard Hotel and The Landmark Bangkok, and well-known restaurants. Khao San Road is the ideal place for backpackers with its wide-selection of Bangkok’s cheap hotels and guesthouses.

Indeed, Bangkok has the right blend of the ancient and modern world. Bangkok’s cosmopolitan amenities and cultural attractions made the city a famous destination, following Paris and London in terms of number of visitors per year. Indeed, the signature Thai smile could make you feel that you are in the company of angels.
