Pattaya is one of Asia’s largest beach resorts. Facing the Gulf of
Thailand, Pattaya’s white sand beaches have been the apple of the Westerners’ eyes for more than four decades. It is one of the most visited places in Thailand, next to
Bangkok.
Pattaya was once a small fishing village before foreigners set foot on the island. In 1961, American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War arrived and took refuge in Pattaya for some R&R. Instantaneously, they were captivated with its beauty. Soon, words about wonderful Pattaya spread. Tourists started pouring in and Pattaya metamorphosed from a fishing village to a beach hub. Pattaya resort hotels took the place of fishing huts while the fishing vessels turned into tourists boats.
Pattaya is tied with the word beach. Why shouldn’t it be? Pattaya is about different types of beaches for different types of activities: serene relaxation at
Naklua beach, watersports at Jomtien Beach and a smorgasboard of activities in Pattaya Beach. The renowned Pattaya Beach is a fusion of the laid-back and the vibrant, the modest and the grand lifestyle. It is overflowing with beach patrons as well as
honeymoon hotels and
guesthouses.
Gearing away from being known as the place of famous go-go and beer bars,
Pattaya is offering visitors a multitude of family-friendly destinations. It is a place of nature adventures, zoos, museums and theme parks like the Million Years Stone Park & Pattaya Crocodile Farm. Pattaya has also been a favourite venue for conferences and family vacations.
Pattaya is serviced by the U-Tapao International Airport. It is located at Sattahip, a 45-minute drive from the city. Another alternative entry point, but a farther one, is the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Travel time from Pattaya to the Suvarnabhumi Airport is around 1 ½ hours. There are also buses from Bangkok going to Pattaya. The train also stops at the Pattaya station.
After 40 years since it opened its doors to foreigners,
Pattaya is an ever-evolving place. Enjoy the white sandy beaches but remember to uncover Pattaya’s other side!
