Overview: Doha   [show/hide]

Doha, Qatar’s capital, is a rapidly growing city as reflected in its colossal structures. The largest city in Qatar, Doha, opened its doors to the world when it hosted the 2006 Asian Games. Doha’s name is said to be derived from as-dawha, meaning “sticky tree,” as people smoked as-dawha in the village. It is also said that Qatar’s capital city got its name from dohat, Arabic for gulf or bay.

Just like its neighbouring cities Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Doha’s economy in the early 20th century relied on the pearl industry. The introduction of cultured pearls led to an economic depression in Doha. Thankfully, the discovery of oil resurrected the country’s economy. As what it did to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, oil fueled the economy of Qatar.

Trying to break away from its dependence on oil, Doha has found an alternative industry to keep its economy strong. With half of Qatar’s population residing in Doha, the city is undergoing a real-estate boom. Towering structures now stand on Doha’s sandy land. The city features world-class buildings which include Doha hotels, business offices, and residences. It was reported that Doha is a more expensive city in terms of real estate prices as compared to Dubai. Currently, the tallest building in Doha, the Dubai Towers Doha, is being constructed. The Dubai Towers Doha will house a 5-star hotel, offices, and penthouses. Top hotel chains have also set their eyes on Doha like the Ritz Carlton. Meanwhile, the Grand Hyattrsian Gulf.

To understand Doha and Qatar’s heritage, visit the Doha Heritage Village. The village was based on traditional Qatari village. It has areas dedicated to pearl trading and weaving. A dhow, traditional boat, is also on display. Meanwhile, the Museum of Islamic Art showcases Muslim artefacts from Asia, Africa, and Europe. Also present are items from the Al-Thani dynasty, as well as art works from all parts of the Middle East.

Doha is home to Qatar’s only international airport, the Doha International Airport. It is the home Qatar Airways and other international carriers. The airport serves flights which connects the city to other continents like Asia and Europe. The New Doha International Airport is still being completed and slated to open in 2011. It was put up to ease the crowdedness of the Doha International Airport. The New Doha International Airport is set to be the first airport to serve Airbus A380.

Indeed, Doha is on its way to becoming a premier city in the Middle East. Qatar’s capital city has plenty of activities in-store for visitors. Those who love the urban life can splurge at luxurious Doha hotels, indulge in the shopping malls, or party in the clubs. On the other hand, those leaning towards the low-key lifestyle can enjoy walks along the Corniche or relax in beautiful Doha resorts. Whatever it is you want to do, Doha has it for you!
