Overview: Buenos Aires   [show/hide]

Buenos Aires, meaning “fair winds” in Spanish, is the capital of the Argentina. It is one of the largest cities in Latin America and one of the ten most populated urban cities in the world, having over 14 million people.

Buenos Aires will seduce you with its elegant combination of old-world charm and modern elegance. It is bedecked with European-inspired buildings, old-world cafes, beautiful parks, and amazing designer shops. The El Microcentro, the heart of the city, has many 19th century buildings, Buenos Aires hotels, shopping malls and stalls, parks and historical sites. A must visit place in the city is the Café Tortoni. It is more than a century old and is said to be the city’s artistic and intellectual centre.

Another area showcasing Buenos Aires history and culture is the district of San Telmo. It features 19th century buildings erected on cobblestone floors. The district underwent some transformation. San Telmo is now noted as place overflowing with art galleries and antique shops. Meanwhile, the Manzana De Las Luces is home to the city’s oldest church, the Iglesia San Ignacio.

Buenos Aires also has museums which draw in a lot of visitors. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes houses works from French impressionists and Argentine artists. Fans of Evita Peron, famous first lady, should visit the Museo Evita and the Cemetria dela Recoleta where she was laid to rest. Another building of historic significance is the Casa Rosada, the pink palace with the famous balcony where Evita stood before crowds. It is also one of the most photographed places in Buenos Aires.

One interesting fact about Buenos Aires is that there is a liberal attitude towards gay society. One of the largest homosexual communities in Latin America can be found in Buenos Aires. Legal civil marriage is recognized and allowed by the Capital Federal law.

Whether you like to learn how to dance the sultry tango, buy cheap yet elegant clothes, or watch a football game, Buenos Aires is bound to give you an unforgettable experience. So, book a flight and enter the Paris of South America via the Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Ezeiza. Those coming in from Chile, Brazil and Paraguay can enter via the Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport, which serves only domestic flights.
