It maybe overshadowed by other South American cities but
Santiago is a stunner in its own way. Despite the noise and smog,
Chile’s capital offers visitors various adventures from architectural appreciation to nature trips and even wine-tasting activities at country vineyards.
Santiago is said to be one of the most modern and largest cities in
South America. It has many entertainment and cultural place like theaters, museums, restaurants, shopping malls, Santiago hotels, bars, etc.
The center of the older part of the city is the Plaza de Armas. The beautiful 16th century square is where eccentric characters convene from old-man playing chess to street photographers with box cameras. One of the best museums in the country is the Chilean Museum of pre-Columbian Art which is just a few minutes walk from the Plaza. On display are artefacts which include ceramics, paintings and figurines from all over
South America. It is also possible to buy authentic reproductions of Indian art and jewelry.
Near the square is the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral which occupies an entire city block. It has an altar made of marble and bronze altar and wooden doors which are intricately carved. The Natural History Museum which features Chile’s colonial history is also near.
The Church of
San Francisco, which dates back to the 1500s, is the oldest building in
Santiago which survived several earthquakes. It has a small museum that offers the largest collection of 17th century paintings in South America, and beautiful gardens containing exotic flowers from as far away as Europe.
Aside from colonial buildings and ancient artefacts, Santiago is gifted with wonderful natural resources. Thus, the city has countless outdoor activities for you. The lush Parque Metropolitano is the city’s largest. It features miles of wooded hiking trails, a zoo and a rock-lined outdoor swimming pool. An added attraction in the park is the cable car ride which gives a picturesque view of the Andes and the suburbs.
The Andes Mountain offers activities like skiing, trekking, horseback riding, climbing and other fun activities. Within a couple of hours drive from
Santiago is Portillo, the most famous ski resort with its heavy year round snowfall. What if you want to go to beach on the same day? The beautiful beach of Vina del Mar which is little more than an hour from downtown Santiago just makes it possible for you to get the best of both worlds.
