Every Day is Earth Day at Green-Minded Hotels
We celebrated 40 years of Earth Day this year, and green-minded, that is, eco-friendly hotels are truly laudable as they participate in this meaningful event that seeks to protect Mother Nature.

A casita at Playa Viva. The bamboo and palm fronds used to build it were all planted and harvested from the site.
Playa Viva is a sustainable resort and community, and is definitely not your ordinary resort hotel. The eco-friendly resort which is among the best resort hotels in Mexico runs in 100 percent off-grid solar energy, the materials used to build the resort are the best in green technology, there is a comprehensive recycling and waste program and only natural and localized products are used for maintenance and cleaning.
Playa Viva’s proprietor, David Leventhal, explains that when they built the hotel, they planted bamboos in the area which they later on used as materials for the hotels. This is the same for the palm fronds used as roofing materials for their guestrooms called casitas. Playa Viva places high importance to involving the community to their projects, where the community’s hopes and aspirations for the place are seriously taken into consideration when they start building the hotels. Thus, beyond the eco-architecture that helps the local ecosystem, Playa Viva honours the community by hiring locals, and patronising local businesses for products needed by the hotel, and also incorporating, not disregarding, time-honoured traditions in the locality.
I am amazed. This is one approach to business that is simply worth emulating.
Playa Viva Playa Viva is located in Zihuatanejo (see wah tah NAY ho) which is located in the state of Guerrero on the Pacific Coast of Mexico about 240km northwest of Acapulco.
Siena Hotel Spa Casino in Reno, for their part, offered Green Beer and an eco-fashion show. Among all luxury hotels off strip Vegas, Siena Hotel Spa is laudable for taking part in the advocacy to protect the ecology. They have a program asking guests to pledge efforts towards carbon emission reduction.
The Siena is located at One South Lake Street, Reno, Nevada, 89501
Acclaimed at the biggest eco-friendly hotel brand, Banyan Tree opened its newest hotel in time for this year’s Earth Day celebration.
The Banyan Tree Al Wadi is found amidst stretches of desert sand in tranquil Wadi Khadeja.
Banyan Tree Al Wadi is the first desert resort in the United Arab Emirates to offer an all-pool villa concept, complete with 3,000 sqm of Asian-inspired hydrotherapy spa facilities, a dedicated nature reserve, a private beach club and an 18-hole championship golf course.
Visiting the Banyan Tree Al Wadi provides the guests with a unique opportunity to mingle with and observe the gentle local desert wildlife up close, including the Arabian gazelles, camels and oryxes.
I am casting my vote of confidence this spectacular hotel will give other luxury hotels in Dubai a good competition.
The resort is a 45-minute drive from Dubai International Airport and a 20-minute drive from the vibrant Ras Al Khaimah city centre.
Happy Earth Day everyone!

Earth Day rocks! Businesses help environmental charities save our Mother Earth. Education is the key to changing people’s attitudes about the environment. I want to book an eco-friendly hotel brand in supporting our Mother Nature.
“Siena Hotel Spa and Casino celebrated Earth Day with an Eco-Fashion Show.”
Now you’ve got me totally curious about what the heck an eco-fashion show is!
This year for Earth Day I took my 5 year old son (well, he was 4 at the time) to plant a tree for the first time ever. It will be awesome to watch it grow with him
The Banyan Tree Al Wadi looks great! But i think it’s not a hotel for the normal man haha. Do you know what price you pay per person per night?
About USD 800.00 a night.
Spectacular looking locations. Definitely strong contenders for attracting the eco conscious traveler.
I may be eco conscious, but at $800 a night, I can only admire the pictures of these places and take your word for the rest.
20 years ago I never thought that awareness and consciousness on the environment will really take place. Not that I was violating nature or against propaganda, I never knew that there are lots of things going on that affects the environment that I was not aware of. I commend those who participate in this advocacy.
Is it possible to extend environment friendly facilities in hotels in the city? Or am I just being too imaginative here? Well, it is something to ponder for us to have a better place to live in.
I am not particulary impressed on Playa Viva as being eco-friendly. The materials used on the cottages need to be replaced regulary otherwise the resort will not be pleasing to the guests. Having said that, it would mean cutting down more trees to retain its beauty.
Another way to be considered eco-friendly will be the intelligent usage of water in hotels. I noticed that most guest care less on how much water they waste in bathes and showers because it is included in the bill. What if hotels metered the water consumption instead?
The reason Banyan Tree Al Wadi dedicated 60 hectares for nature reserve so that their hotel will retain the view they promised their visitors. By doing so, tall buildings will not block their view and it will provide wider perspective of the hotel. I see no sincerity in the long run for our environment.
“Eco-friendly” is used a lot today as a marketing tool to attract people who want to do something that can make them feel good about themselves. These hotels are in it for the money and do not really care a lot for the environment.
These hotels are really very inspiring. Other countries should also follow this kind of advocacy. Some companies already have their social responsibilities team. i hope they would also establish their eco-responsibility departments, especially hotel companies because they are close collaborated to tourism. and i agree to your saying that Everyday should be Earth Day. We need to do it now. Two thumbs up!
